Legal Archives News

[This message is being posted to multiple discussion lists; please
excuse the duplication]

The Legal History and Rare Books Special Interest Section of the
American Association of Law Libraries has recently formed an Ad-Hoc
Archives Committee to determine the level of interest within the law
library and legal communities concerning the subject of legal archives
and manuscripts, and the potential for making this a permanent committee
of the section.

The Ad-Hoc Archives Committee is also presently working on a proposal
for a program session concerning Legal Archives, to be given at the 2001
Annual Meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 14-19, 2001.

It is envisioned that this program session will discuss the basic issues
of both legal archives and manuscripts collections, and the issues of
attorney/client privilege and confidentiality as they relate to legal
archives and manuscripts.

This committee and session should be of interest to librarians in all
law libraries that hold collections of either legal archives (i.e. their
law school archives) or manuscripts (i.e. papers of private individuals
or organizations associated with the law); private law firm librarians
tasked with the management of their firm's records and/or archives (i.e.
records management); or to legal historians and others who want a better
understanding of these issues.

The Ad-Hoc Archives Committee is interested in hearing from any
individuals with an interest in these issues, either concerning the
committee or its proposed program session, so as to better serve the
profession. Please address any remarks or suggestions to:
