Identifying image type

The Shaker Library/Archives in New Gloucester, Maine has within its
collections nine, turn of the century portraits which I need to
identify as far as the process used in their creation. They all
exhibit preservation needs.

They appear to be photographic images projected? onto paper (some then
mounted on canvases) and enhanced with charcoal and white chalk. It
is these added elements which are deteriorating.

Any information as to the process used and measures needed to
preserve these images would be appreciated.
