Re: Mold problem & respirators

I agree with what Gloria says, and need to add this:

in order to safely wear a respirator regularly, you really
should take AND PASS a respirator test. I know this because
I worked for more than 7 years as a Caltrans Highway
Maintenance Worker, at the San Francisco - Oakland Bay
Bridge. Our painters must wear respirators for most of their
8-hour work shifts. And the state insists that BEFORE any
employee is approved to wear a respirator, he or she must
take and pass a respirator test. This is because the filters in
the respirators lessen the amount of air you are able to pull in
with every breath.

The test to see if the respirator fits properly is simple: they break
a capsule of ammonia under your nose when you are wearing the
respirator. If you can smell ammonia, the respirator does not fit
properly.
Men who have beards must use a hood system, or something else,
because no respirator can seal properly over facial hair.

People who have respiratory problems might find those problems
worsened if they wear respirators regularly without the approval of
a doctor.

Mold is NOT to be treated lightly. SOME varieties can be VERY
harmful. but MOST are not that bad. PLEASE check with a knowledgeable
medical person before working in areas where there are molds.

I HOPE the records ARE salvageable!
