THE BIBLE AS BOOK: THE REFORMATION
            Edited by Orlaith O'Sullivan

The Reformation period was one of crisis and innovation in society and
culture. Reformation attitudes towards the bible reflect the unstable and
shifting cultural environment of the day. The Bible as Book: The
Reformation brings together 12 new essays which examine the complex history
of the bible during this equally complex period. Authored by some of the
most respected specialists in the field and edited by Orlaith O'Sullivan,
this book is volume three in The Bible as Book series.

Each contributor attempts to answer some of the most pressing questions in
Reformation biblical studies, such as: How did religious leaders help shape
the readings of those lay people who were able to read the bible in their
own language for the first time? How did the clergy control and suppress
heretical musing in the increasing number of annotated editions? Where was
the editio princips of the English Bible printed? Can modernity read the
Renaissance bible? What role did illustrations in bibles play in the spread
of Protestantism? The answers to these engaging propositions are inventive,
challenging and always thought provoking.

This collection of essays is based on the proceedings of a conference on
the Bible in the Reformation, held at Hampton Court, Hereford in May of
1997. It is printed in association with The Scriptorium: Center for
Christian Antiquities. Co-published with The British Library.
