Position:       Project Archivist or Archives Technician

Location:       Dakota Wesleyan University, Layne Library

Responsibilities:  The position is responsible for organizing, inventorying,
and maintaining manuscript, photograph, art, and artifact collections of
Layne Library. Major collections include the papers of Senator Francis Case,
photographs of Senator George McGovern, papers and photographs of historian
J. Leonard Jennewein, and archival records of the university. Duties include
compiling inventories, databases, and finding aids for all collections;
physical arrangement of the collections into usable order, and rehousing
materials in appropriate archival containers; and stabilization and
treatment of fragile or damaged items, including papers, photographs, art
works, and recordings.

In addition, the archivist will develop and implement an overall plan to
provide secure storage for archival collections and appropriate space for
research use and collection processing, and will promote and integrate the
archives program with other library and university activities.

Qualifications:  Archivist: Masters of Library Science, Masters in History,
or equivalent in education and experience. Archives Technician: Bachelor's
degree in history or social sciences, or equivalent in education and
experience. Preference will be given to candidates having previous
experience with archival and/or library collections, historical research,
strong writing skills, and the ability to work independently. Experience
with word processing, database systems, and library systems desirable. Must
be able to climb ladders and lift boxes up to 40 pounds.
