Position Vacancy

Title: Archivist or Senior Archivist--2-year Mellon Foundation funded
grant, based at the New-York Historical Society.

Description: The Archivist/Senior Archivist processes manuscript
collections relating to the history of New York and the United States;
reviews and revises existing finding aids and creates new finding aids
using a standardized finding aid format; marks up finding aids in XML for
Encoded Archival Description; trains and supervises archival technicians in
XML markup and rehousing materials; assists in establishing and
implementing workflow and production standards.  Duties may also include
overseeing the arrangement and description of manuscript collections;
ensuring adherence to processing standards across collections; establishing
workflow and production standards; determining priorities; and training and
supervising professional and non-professional staff.

Required qualifications: At the Archivist level, M.A. in history with
archival management certificate or ALA-accredited MLS with archives
concentration, plus one year archival experience, or equivalent
combination; knowledge of MARC AMC format, XML, and Encoded Archival
Description.  Preferred qualifications: familiarity with Microsoft Access
and/or other database management software; knowledge of American and/or New
York history; experience working in humanities collections; excellent
written and oral communication skills.  In addition to the above
educational background, the position at the Senior Archivist level requires
five years experience processing archives or manuscript collections, and
supervisory experience.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and background.  Minimum: $35,000 at
the Archivist level; $40,000 at the Senior Archivist level.

The New-York Historical Society and New York University Libraries: the
New-York Historical Society Library affiliated with the New York University
Libraries in June 1997.  The New-York Historical Society's research library
is one of the oldest in the country, and a principal source for primary and
secondary research in the study of New York history and life.  Its
collections encompass approximately 400,000 volumes; 7,000 linear feet of
manuscripts, including diaries, letters, and military, political and
business records; and an estimated one million items in its print,
photograph and architecture collections.
