PROJECT ARCHIVIST

Whitney Museum of American Art Archives

The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks applications for a Project
Archivist who will establish its institutional archives.  Reporting to the
Museum Librarian, the archivist will create a mission statement; institute
policies and procedures; arrange, describe, and preserve archival
collections; provide reference access; and work with Museum staff to launch
a records management program. The archivist will write finding aids,
establishing a standard format for eventual conversion into electronic
format (Encoded Archival Description), and will create MARC/AMC catalog
records for inclusion in the library's online public access catalog.

The archival collections document the founding of the Whitney Museum and its
evolution into a major force for interpretation and scholarly study of
American Art and culture. Materials consist of historical papers that
document the Museum's history, exhibitions, collections, Edward Hopper
Research Papers and Records of the American Art Research Council.

Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will have an A.L.A. accredited M.L.S, M.L.I.S., or an M.A.
in history, with a concentration in archives; 2-3 years experience in an
institutional archives; working knowledge of current standards in archival
management and preservation; experience with RLIN, library online systems,
Encoded Archival Description and MARC/AMC format; good interpersonal and
management skills; demonstrated written and oral communication.  A degree in
art history or American studies and museum experience are preferred.
