Texas Monthly Magazine Archives available for research

SWT invites research in Texas Monthly Magazine Archives

The Southwestern Writers Collection is the home of the Texas Monthly
Magazine Archives, which chronicle virtually all aspects of the
magazine?s history. A complete, detailed listing of the First Five Years
of the Editorial Series of the Texas Monthly magazine Archives has been
completed, and is available at www.library.swt.edu/swwc.

For more than 25 years, Texas Monthly has commented upon ? and helped
invent ? the way in which many inhabitants of the state now see
themselves. A publication unique in the United States, it wields major
cultural and political influence in Texas, and, transcending place of
origin, earns nationwide distinction as well. Texas Monthly has been
honored with eight National Magazine Awards (the industry equivalent of
the Pulitzer Prize) and 38 nominations ? a record surpassed by only The
New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper?s Magazine, and Esquire. Thanks
to its journalistic excellence and commercial success, Texas Monthly has
had a resounding impact within the publishing industry at large.

The Texas Monthly Archives are notable due to the completeness of the
record they provide and to the stature of the magazine?s contributors
over the years. Moreover, they hold the keys to the evolution and
history of a distinguished periodical and its signature blend of late
20th-century reportage, popular culture, literature, history, and art.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Texas State Library
and Archives Commission, and was completed by Project Archivist, Carolyn
McClurkan, C.A., in collaboration with the Southwestern Writers
Collection staff, Summer 2000.

The Southwestern Writers Collection is located on the 7th floor of the
Albert B. Alkek Library, on the campus of Southwest Texas State
University, in San Marcos, TX, between Austin and San Antonio. The
Collection is open for research 8-5 Monday-Friday, and until 9pm on
Tuesdays. Call 512-245-2313 or visit our web site at
www.library.swt.edu/swwc for further information.
