Purpose of Announcement:  The Maine State Archives is seeking to fill
an
Archivist I position.

Scope of Work:  This is an entry-level professional position covering
a
variety of standard archival activities, including providing
assistance to
patrons in the Research Room, answering requests for information by
telephone, e-mail and regular mail; creating finding aids, ordering
and
arranging records, and applying basic preservation techniques on
records.
Work is performed under general supervision.

Typical Duties:  The incumbent will primarily serve as a Research
Room
attendant, assisting patrons in the use of records and agency
equipment, and
will be assigned to answer inquiries received electronically and by
mail and
telephone.  The incumbent will create finding aids and indexes in
varying
levels of complexity; and will perform such tasks as humidifying,
flat-folding and ordering and arranging selected records.  Some tasks
will
require electronic data entry.  The candidate may be assigned to
perform
independent research and prepare reports in response to inquiries
from other
State agencies or as part of in-house projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  The candidate should have
experience in performing independent research as well as experience
in basic
archival procedures and methodology.  Familiarity with personal
computers is
required, and knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database
software programs is desirable.  The candidate should have experience
in
dealing with the public and be able to respond to patrons with
patience and
courtesy.  Knowledge of Maine government and history, as indicated
by
academic courses, publications, work or other experience is
desirable.

Minimum Qualifications: (1) Bachelors degree in archival methods, or
in
history or library science, with courses in archival methods; OR (2)
two
years experience in institutional archival work. Helpful:
Certification
from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
