Guidelines for transcription / editing

I've got a patron who would like to transcribe a handwritten diary for
publication. They are looking for any guidelines that might assist with
proper transcription techniques -- how to correctly include/describe
marginalia, drawings, etc. Seems as if linguists, sociologists and
anthropologists have standards they use in transcribing oral histories.
What about the field of documentary editing?

Anyone out there know of good sources for this sort of thing?

Please reply offline to me at copper@mtu.edu
