Guidelines for transcription SUMMARY

Thanks to the many folks who took time to reply to my request for written
guidelines for transcription of historical documents.

Of the many responses, the clear winner was

Editing historical documents : a handbook of practice / by Michael E.
Stevens, Steven B. Burg ( with support from the American Association for
State and Local History, the Association for Documentary Editing and the
State Historical Society of Wisconsin). Walnut Creek, CA : AltaMira Press,
c1997 [264 p. : ill., map ; 24 cm, includes bibliographical references (p.
243-256) and index] I see that a paperback version of this title is
available on amazon.com for $24.95, and is probably for sale on via other
services.

A Guide to Documentary Editing by Mary-Jo Kline, Linda Johanson, 352 pages
2nd edition (January 1998) Johns Hopkins Univ Pr; ISBN: 0801856868
Available via amazon.com at $26.95 (special order)

Principles of Bibliographical Description, by Fredson Bowers, (Winchester :
St. Paul's Bibliographies, 5th editon with introduction by G. Thomas
Tanselle.
Year: 1994, c 1949), xxv, 505 p Currently out of print?

Several list members suggested looking at the documentary editing projects,
sponsored largely through NHPRC money, to edit/publish the papers of famous
American statesmen (statespeople?). Some examples were the papers of
George Washington ( http://www.virginia.edu/gwpapers/ ), James Madison (
http://www.virginia.edu/pjm/ ), and Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton
( http://ecssba.rutgers.edu/ ).

Several others suggested purusing leads/advice through professional
associations that may be more active in this sort of work. Included in
this list were the Association for Documentary Editing (
http://etext.virginia.edu/ade/ )
the Association of Professional Genealogists ( http://www.apgen.org )

Appreciations to all who shared.
