Re: archives mystery needed

I recall about 4 years or so ago, a professor from an Ohio academic
institution stole some items, perhaps maps, from the Vatican Library. I
recall he was a history prof. When he attempted to sell them some months
later here in the US, the print or map dealer with whom he was dealing
became suspicious, but did not let on to the prof. The dealer seemed a lot
more astute than the prof. It was determined that these maps or documents
were far from ordinary. A check of either the Vatican holdings and/or the
professor's travels ascertained (I love that word, rarely having a chance to
use it) that he had likely 'relieved' them from the Vatican. He was
arrested, and I am not sure if he went to the Big House. Anyway, the Vatican
tightened up its library use policy which I guess had been fairly trusting
and relatively open to academics. I think I also recall that the then
current Vatican librarian was an American priest....
