ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The governor of Maryland is covered by the state's public
information law and can't automatically claim executive privilege to keep
his records private, the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday
The state's highest court split 4-3 in its opinion on the case filed three
years ago by The Washington Post.
The newspaper filed suit after Gov. Parris Glendening refused to release
schedules listing all of his appointments and denied a request for phone
records for him and two aides.

Inspection records under scrutiny
Doubts raised about alarm information

NAPLES - The Collier County School District is investigating whether fire
alarm inspection records were falsified before schools opened this year,
Superintendent Dan White said Monday.
The reason is that "we may have a discrepancy between our original internal
certification for all of our buildings ... and the most recent re-inspection
by our local fire departments," White said at a hastily called press
conference Monday.
Those inspections by fire marshals revealed that there are still numerous
fire safety violations at 28 out of 37 public schools in Collier County,
officials said.

The three floors of tiny rooms form what Ron Chapman calls "a little jewel"
in the cultural crown that is the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
The Robert Allerton Library does sparkle in white new-ness and Chapman
intends to return the renovated facility to its glory not only visually but
in content.
The library holds more than 35,000 volumes on art -- from biographies of
artists, magazines and catalogs to a 1758 French-Italian dictionary and a
page from a King James Bible published in 1611. The books cover myriad
artistic expressions -- Tiffany windows, Maine seascapes, furniture, weaving
and textiles, photographs, lithographs, jewelry, ceramics, mirrors,
sculpture.

The setting is grim--a 35- by 15-foot room with a murky tan tiled floor and
concrete brick walls on the ninth floor of the National Archives building.
But on display in this top-security room, known as "the vault," are
documents blazing with the bright optimism of California's founders.
In honor of the state's 150th birthday last Saturday, archivists have pulled
a selection of documents to illustrate the passionate debate that played out
in the nation's capital over California's admission to the Union in 1850.

COLUMBIA - Over 27 boxes of documents that were the focus of a Freedom of
Information Commission ruling are now at town hall, but are still off-limits
to the public.
"They are here at town hall but they are not open for public inspection,"
said First Selectman Adella Urban.
The documents contain records of the arbitration proceedings between the
town and J. S. Nasin Contractors, as well as other documents that the town's
attorneys used as evidence during the arbitration. According to town
officials, the documents had been at the law offices of Pepe & Hazard in
Hartford.
