Re: Old Photograph Stuck To Glass

It's amazing to me that, once people recommend professional care to deal
with this photograph, they then talk about 'tricky solutions' to the
problem. It is not particularly helpful as many institutions do not have
any way of setting up any kind of treatment station.

Instead, please contact any of the following:
The Image Permanence Institute in Rochester,
The Northeast Document Conservation Center, Andover, MA
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia,
PA.

All these organizations have conservators and/or field services staff that
can offer appropriate advice.

As with the others agree a photo restorer would be the best route.

One alternate method might be to soak the picture and glass in a tray
using water and "Photo-flo" solution for a length of time. (Lots of it)
The latter is a detergent used in photography for negatives, but I've
found it handy for other purposes. The picture image is imbedded in a
gelatine coating on the paper and if it gets thoroughly soaked it may
loosen enough to free itself of the glass. The process is similar to
soaking wallpaper to remove it from the wall. (Sans abrading the paper to
make the water penetrate)

Caution, this is a hairy procedure and could completely destroy the
image. Have used the procedure and it can work.

After the picture is loosened it can be dried in a photo dryer or a
blotter roll made for that purpose.

Much depends on how valuableand how much the media person wants to
preserve it.
