ROCHESTER GENERAL CELEBRATES CENTENNIAL NURSING ORGANIZATIONS DURING
ARCHIVES WEEK

The Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives at Rochester General Hospital
annually honors those organizations that have given a Century of Service to
the hospital and the Rochester community.
Their contributions will be recognized and celebrated during the hospital's
Centennial Day Program on Thursday, October 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the Twig
Auditorium as part of Archives Week.
This year's Century of Service Award will be given to three nursing
organizations that have Rochester City/General Hospital roots: the American
Journal of Nursing, the New York State Nurses Association and the Genesee
Valley Nursing Association.
Each was initiated in 1900, a pivotal year for New York State nursing and
the nursing profession in general. Sophia Palmer, superintendent of
Rochester City Hospital (Rochester General before 1911), was active in the
campaign to professionalize nursing. In March of that year the Monroe County
Graduate Nurse's Association was formed, the first such association in New
York State. The same month a movement was begun to form the New York State
Nurses Association.
In October the first issue of the American Journal of Nursing was published
under the auspices of the Associated Alumnae of Trained Nurses of the United
States, which later it became the American Nurses Association. Miss Palmer
was magazine's first editor, compiling the first two issues in her quarters
at the hospital. She would be the editor for the next 20 years here in
Rochester.
Also, the hospital's Central Stores unit will be honored as the first
hospital central storeroom outside of the military.
A reception will follow the ceremony. The public is welcome. For additional
information about this event, contact Philip Maples, curator/director of the
Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives, at 922-3521.
