Re: A Little Too Generous?

It seems to me that if the scholar and the granting agency want access to the documents, they should be willing to pay to have all of the items properly cataloged to the appropriate (collection, series, subseries, item) level first to insure context, that all copyright restrictions are honored, that the Birmingham Public Library be paid for staff time to make these items accessible, and that they pay for any preservation work and transportation (if needed) on those documents to be done first.

If this is a published work, the Birmingham Public Library (BPL)ought to receive a portion of the monies received as well. Thus at the very least the BPL ought not to lose money on this "opportunity." Also, how about microfilming (for preservation) the documents first and scanning (for access) from the microfilm? Is this a possibility?

Others probably have even better ideas, but these seem to be minimum requirements for the BPL to even participate in this project.

Just a few stray thoughts.
