Women in Print call for papers

Women in Print:
authors, publishers, readers, and more since 1876

To be held in Madison, Wisconsin
September 14-15, 2001

CALL FOR PAPERS

This conference will address the world of print that women have
inherited, constructed, and consumed over the last 125 years. Barbara
Sicherman, Kenan Professor of American Institutes and Values at
Trinity College, will deliver the keynote address. A number of
additional special presentations are also planned. Papers should
focus on and illuminate the interaction between the reader and
printed materials (e.g. books, periodicals, newspapers, comic books,
etc.) aimed at or produced and read by women. Studies dealing with
class, religion, journalism, feminism, immigrants, racial and sexual
minorities, radicals, etc., are especially welcome. Studies of single
group experiences and studies that compare the historical sociology
of print in the lives of women located at the periphery of power are
of great interest to the Center.

The Center encourages the interdisciplinary study of print culture
history and welcomes proposals from scholars in all fields. The
directors and an advisory board will select a number of papers from
the conference for publication. The most successful papers will
combine a rigorous theoretical perspective with significant research
in primary resources to produce an account that deals with texts and
readers in meaningful ways. Print Culture in A Diverse America
(University of Illinois Press, 1998) contains selected papers from
the Center's first national conference in 1995. The volume, edited by
James P. Danky and Wayne Wiegand, was awarded the 1999 Carey
McWilliams Award from the Greenwood Publishing Group. Defining Print
Culture for Youth: The Cultural Work Children's Literature, edited by
Anne Lundin (Ohio State University Press, forthcoming) contains
selected papers from the Center's second national conference in 1997,
which focused on children and reading since 1876.

Proposals for individual papers or entire sessions (up to three
presentations) should include a 250-word abstract and a
one-pagecurriculum vitae. If at all possible, submissions should be
made via email. Deadline for submission is January 2, 2001.
