Archives Week in Utah

     Archives and records repositories throughout Utah are observing
Archives Week, October 6-13, 2000. The theme for this year's events is
"Remembering."  Planned events include a symposium; records conference;
folklore workshop; classes on the care and conservation of artifacts,
textiles, photographs, and paper items; historical lectures by prominent
scholars; behind-the-scenes tours of participating repositories;
painting, photograph, and document exhibits; a banquet; and family
history classes.
     The kickoff event for Archives Week was the fall caucus of the
Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists (CIMA), which held a symposium
Friday, October 6, at Brigham Young University. The conference theme
was "Remembering." Dr. Everett L. Cooley, first state archivist of
Utah, was honored for lifelong contributions to "Remembering" and
sharing the past through distinguished achievements in the archival
field prior to the symposium.
     In separate ceremonies on September 19, Utah Governor Michael O.
Leavitt signed an Archives Week declaration and West Valley City Mayor
Gearld [GEARLD is the correct spelling] L. Wright issued an Archives
Appreciation Week proclamation. Both documents commend the efforts of
those engaged in the archival profession for helping to preserve our
history and heritage. County commissions in Salt Lake County and Utah
County also issued Archives Appreciation Week proclamations on Thursday,
October 4.
     Information about the symposium, a schedule of events, a scan of
Utah's first ever Archives Week poster, a scan of Governor Leavitt's
declaration, and the text of Mayor Wright's proclamation may be accessed
