POSITIONS AVAILABLE--Center for Jewish History



The Center for Jewish History, a major new resource for research in Judaic
Studies, seeks to fill the following positions funded by a three year
grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission for
the Integrated Collection Management and Access System Project. The Center
for Jewish History is an association of five archival/library and museum
institutions that share a commitment to the collection, preservation, and
dissemination of materials related to the history of the Jewish

Project Director (three year position; half-time)
The Center for Jewish History seeks a Project Director to manage a
three-year grant from the NHPRC to establish an Integrated Collection
Management and Access System for the Center. This is a half-time
position. Work completed during the Project will include a survey of the
levels of archival description and establishment and preparation of
finding aids including EAD mark-up; selection and implementation of an
online public access catalog including retrospective conversion; and a
disaster recovery plan to insure preparedness for library, archival, and
museum collections in many formats. The Project will take place within the
context of an integrated management and access plan that incorporates
public services, collection management, preservation and automation
activities. The Project Director will be responsible for managing and
supervising all of the elements of the work in close collaboration and
coordination with staff throughout the Center including archivists,
librarians, and administrative staff organized into a number of existing
and newly formed committees and working groups. This will include ensuring
that activitings are completed on schedule, monitoring expenditures, and
preparing reports for NHPRC.

The Project Director, who will report to the CEO of the Center, will
consult regularly with the Executive Directors of the partner institutions
and work on a day-to-day basis with the Coordinator of Description and
Systems Coordinator.

Qualifications:  ALA accredited MLS or MA in history with archival
management certificate.  Minimum of five years experience working in a
research institution with library and archival holdings; including
progressively responsible assignments administering complex projects in a
dynamic organization. Candidates should demonstrate successful experience
monitoring budgets and writing reports. Familiarity with archival and
library processing standards and procedures and with the application of
technology to materials management and access systems
required. Demonstrated experience with archival processing and procedures
preferred. Proficiency with at least one of the following languages highly
desirable: Yiddish, Hebrew, German, Russian.

Salary:  $30,000 (half-time).  Attractive benefits package.

Senior Project Archivist and Coordinator of Description (three year grant
funded archival arrangement and description project)
Description: Survey, process and describe archival collections relating to
the history of the Jewish people; coordinate descriptive standards for all
archival collections; review and revise existing finding aids and create
new finding aids using a standardized finding aid format; mark up finding
aids in XML for Encoded Archival Description; assist in the creation of
worksheets for MARC-AMC cataloging; supervise and develop workflow and
production standards. Supervise two Processing Archivists, Archival
Assistant and MARC cataloger. Reports to the Project Director.

Required qualifications: M.A. in history with archival management
certificate, or ALA- accredited MLS with archives major; five years
archival experience with supervisory experience; familiarity with MARC AMC
format, XML, and Encoded Archival Description. Preferred
qualifications: familiarity with Microsoft Access and/or other database
management software; experience working in humanities collections and
fluency in at least one of the following languages: Yiddish, Hebrew,
German, or Russian.
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and

Processing Archivist (three year grant funded archival arrangement and
description project)
Description: Survey, process and describe archival collections relating to
the history of the Jewish people; review and revise existing finding aids
and create new finding aids using a standardized finding aid format; mark
up finding aids in XML for Encoded Archival Description; assist in
creation of worksheets for MARC-AMC cataloging; assist in establishing
workflow and production standards. Reports to the Senior Archivist for
this Project.

Required qualifications: M.A. in history with archival management
certificate, or ALA- accredited MLS with archives major; one year archival
experience or equivalent combination; knowledge of MARC AMC format, XML,
and Encoded Archival Description. Preferred qualifications: familiarity
with Microsoft Access and/or other database management
software; experience working in humanities collections and fluency in at
least one of the following languages: Yiddish, Hebrew, German, or Russian.
Salary commensurate with experience and
background.  Minimum: $35,000. Attractive benefits package.

Archival Assistant (three year grant funded archival arrangement and
description project
Description: To assist with the survey, processing and description of
archival collections relating to the history of the Jewish people; make
revisions to electronic finding aids as directed; produce electronic
versions of print finding aids using optical character recognition
software; input information from hard copy survey sheets into a survey
database; rehouse archival materials as directed.

Required qualifications: B.A. in humanities; one year archival experience
preferred as well as familiarity with Microsoft Access and/or other
database management software.

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and
background.  Minimum:$25,000. Attractive benefits package.
