The following project archivist position is open at the Graduate Theological
Union in Berkeley, CA.

                PROJECT ARCHIVIST
                New Religious Movements Research Collection


                The Graduate Theological Union, located in Berkeley,
California, is a major national and international center for graduate
theological study, education for ministry, and applied research and public
policy formation in religion and society.  The Library staff serves the
research, teaching, and study needs of the consortium, as well as provides
reference assistance to local religious leaders, the general public, and
students from other institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area.

                The Graduate Theological Union Archives is a department of
the Library.  Its holdings include Institutional Records of the GTU and a
Manuscripts Collection of donated material from organizations and
individuals working in the area of ecumenical and inter-religious activity
in the western United States and Pacific Rim.

                The Graduate Theological Union Library has received a
Library Services and Technology Act Grant from the California State Library
to process the New Religious Movements Research Collection into the Graduate
Theological Union Archives.

                The NRM Research Collection and related collections contain
80 linear feet of manuscript and ephemeral material, ca.1975-98.  The
Collection began as a special collection of the GTU Library in cooperation
with and to support the work of the Center for the Study of New Religious
Movements.  The Center was established by the GTU in 1977 and did pioneering
work in the study of the developing religious movements of the late 1960s.
Though the Center ceased operation in 1983, the GTU Library continued to
build the Research Collection.  It is comprised of materials solicited from
over 900 new religious movements groups making it a unique resource for
study in California and throughout the United States.

                The Project Archivist, under the supervision of the GTU
Archivist, will be responsible for processing the Collections, writing
finding aids and catalog records, and will assist in designing a collection
website.  Expected skills include knowledge of archival standards practice,
and cataloging; good verbal and written communication; ability to work
independently; supervisory ability (one student assistant); and computer
knowledge including word processing, website design, and Encoded Archival
Description.

                This is a grant-funded position for one year, part-time
(number of hours per week negotiable) at $15.00-$20.00/hour (no benefits)
depending on skills and experience.

                Required:  Training and/or experience working with archival
collections.  Ability to lift at least 35 lbs.  Preferred:  M.L.S. with
specialization in Archives, or Certified Archivist.
