Position:
EAD Project Manager, Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections,
Cornell University Library


Cornell University Library is seeking an archivist for a two-year
project to expand access to and use of Cornell's collections via
emerging technologies. The EAD Project Manager will participate in
developing networked access to finding aids for archival and
manuscript collections through the use of Encoded Archival
Description (EAD). The project will create an online repository of
archival finding aids for Cornell University Library by marking up
existing machine-readable finding aids using EAD; converting and
marking up typescript finding aids; and upgrading older finding aids.
The project will also establish guidelines and infrastructure for
subsequent projects, and will explore the use of Endeavor Information
System's ENCompass to provide integrated access to finding aids.


Duties & Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Head of Technical Services and working
closely with curators and technical advisors, the EAD Project Manager
will direct Cornell University Library's EAD implementation project.
She/he will oversee all stages of EAD markup, from machine-readable
or paper copy to delivery of encoded documents over the Web.  He/she
will train students and staff in EAD markup and coordinate their
efforts; establish markup and content guidelines; develop templates
to use in encoding; and facilitate workflow.  He/she will encode
finding aids; edit, standardize, and reconcile legacy guides and
previous practices; and investigate and recommend mechanisms for
providing networked access to finding aids.

Qualifications
Graduate degree in library/archival/information science, computer
science, humanities or social sciences; archives or special
collections library experience; knowledge of archival theory and
practice; knowledge of computers, networks, and digital access
techniques and issues; excellent communication skills,
organizational skills, and analytical ability.

Preferred: Knowledge of EAD encoding techniques and practices; grant
writing ability and experience.

Salary  Salary commensurate with qualifications.
