The Libraries at the University of California, Irvine invite applications for the position of University Archivist in the Department of Special Collections and Archives. This appointment will be in the Librarian Series at the Assistant rank (entry level).
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and Archives,
the University Archivist is responsible for overall administration of the
University Archives collections. Engages in active collection development
to acquire the most significant materials of permanent historical value
for documenting the history and functions of the campus. Collaborates
actively with UCI Records Manager. Works to implement archival management
of records in electronic form. Oversees University Archives public
service and engages in active outreach, including providing instruction
in use of University Archives materials and preparing exhibits. Supervises
and performs collections management activities according to departmental
policies and procedures, including accessioning, processing, preservation,
preparation of finding aids, encoding finding aids using Encoded Archival
Description, and preparing USMARC catalog records for archival collections
following APPM, LCSH, OCLC, and USMARC standards. Trains and supervises
processing assistants. Participates actively with other departmental
librarians in setting priorities and establishing policies. Serves
as a member of the University of California Archivists Council.
Qualifications
Required:
Preferred:A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or a graduate degree in archival studies. Formal coursework or training in archival management and theory. Minimum one year of recent archival processing and finding aid preparation experience. Understanding of and commitment to accepted protocols for arrangement, description, cataloging, and preservation of archival materials. Familiarity with concepts related to archival management of electronic records. Familiarity with basic records management principles and current trends. Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, such as Encoded Archival Description and related software tools, quickly and effectively. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work effectively within a culturally diverse academic community. Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion.
The Libraries
The UCI Libraries are in a major period of growth and consist of the
Main Library, the Science Library, and the Medical Center Library.
The Main Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social
Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management, the Department
of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library
primarily serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological
Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information
and Computer Science. The Medical Center Library serves the UCI Medical
Center, located in Orange, 12 miles from the main campus.
The UCI Libraries have a staff of 287 FTE and an organizational structure that includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments. The library collection consists of over 2.1 million volumes and 19,000 current serial titles, a substantial microform collection, and an aggressively expanding electronic resources collection. The UCI Libraries are a member of the: Association of Research Libraries (ARL), California Digital Library (CDL), Coalition of Networked Information (CNI), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), and Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).
University of California, Irvine
One of ten University of California campuses, the University of California,
Irvine, is nestled in 1,489 acres of coastal foothills, five miles from
the Pacific Ocean, between San Diego and Los Angeles. The 1999-2000
enrollment was 19,285 students with a faculty of approximately 1,050.
The 1999-2000 student population numbered 15,522 undergraduates, 2,677
graduate students, and 1,086 health sciences students. Ethnic/minority
students represent about 62% of the student body. Growth in student
enrollment and faculty is anticipated at an approximate rate of 5% a year,
reaching a 50% increase by the year 2010. The University offers 29
doctoral programs in addition to the M.D. UCI is ranked nationally
in the top universities; several doctoral programs are ranked in the top
ten. UCI is a member of the Association of American Universities
(AAU).
Librarians at the University of California, Irvine are academic appointees and receive potential career status at the time of their initial appointment. Librarians are periodically subject to administrative and peer review for merit increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside the Library; 3) university and public service; and 4) research and other creative activity. They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group life and health insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience within an anticipated salary range of $37,728 - $42,780 (pending union approval).
