SOLINET Workshop Week - Nov. 13-17, 2000

Preservation Services and Digital library Services at SOLINET are presenting
a week-long opportunity to learn a range of digital library and digitization
skills, from developing sustainable programs, to managing individual
projects, to hands-on production processes for imaging projects. Choose the

 ***********************DIGITAL LIBRARY PROGRAM
DEVELOPMENT***************************

Monday -Tuesday, November 13-14, 200 from 9am - 4pm at SOLINET, Atlanta,
Georgia

This two-day workshop is meant to help provide the knowledge and expertise
necessary to begin developing local digital resources in a responsible
sustainable, and systematic manner, integrated with other library procedures
and workflow. Topics include: Program planning and development, standards,
workflow analysis, lifecycle analysis, and much more.

Instructor is Erich Kesse, Director of the Digital Library Center,
University of Florida. Prior to joining the Center, Mr. Kesse served as the
Preservation Department Chair at the University of Florida.

Cost is $200 full members ($190 early bird, $225 late registration); $210
associate users ($200 early bird, $235 late registration); $260
affiliate(non-members), ($250 early bird, $285 late registration)

******INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL IMAGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR LIBRARIES AND
ARCHIVES*****

Wednesday, November 15, 2000 from 9am - 4pm at SOLINET, Atlanta, Georgia.

The increase in digital imaging projects for library and archival
collections raises many issues related to selection, resource allocation and
long-term access (preservation). Issues addressed in this one-day workshop
include: What collection or resources are appropriate for digital
conversion? How will the digital files be maintained? Who is responsible for
ensuring future access to this digital information? To name a few. This
workshop is designed to provide participants with the tools needed to make
informed decisions about undertaking a scanning project.

Instructor is Faye Phillips, Assistant Dean of Libraries for Special
Collections, Louisiana State University.

Cost is $95 full members ($85 early bird, $120 late registration), $105
associate users ($95 early bird, $130 late registration), and $135 affiliate
(non-members), ($125 early bird, $160 late registration). Any institution
within Georgia qualifies for the member rate.

*****************DIGITAL IMAGING OF PHOTOGRAPHIC
COLLECTIONS*****************

Thursday-Friday, November 16-17, 2000 at SOLINET, Atlanta, Georgia from 9am
- 4pm.

This two-day workshop provides the information necessary to select, convert,
and provide access to an image database. It focuses on the technical aspects
and on the issues associated with using digital imaging technology to
convert photographic materials and make them accessible on the Internet.
Included are hands-on demonstrations and exercises covering scanning
techniques, lighting, applying metadata standards, and database development.


Instructor is Grace Agnew, Assistant Director for Systems and Technical
Services at the Georgia Tech Library and Laurel Crafts, Project Coordinator
at the Georgia Tech Library who manages the digital imaging projects for the
library.

Cost is $190 Full Members ($180 early bird, $215 late registration), $200
Associate Users ($190 early bird, $225 late registration), and $250
Affiliate (non-members), ($240 early bird, $275 late registration). Any
institution within Georgia qualifies for the member rate.
