FW: compact shelving question

The California State Archives building, completed in 1995, was built to
accommodate compact shelving. There are actually six floors of stacks in the
building with compact shelving on five of the six floors. When the building
was built, the tracks for compact shelving were installed embedded in the
floor. The shelving includes standard fixed units as well as the compact
shelving. Each floor is designed to so that the fixed shelving can be
converted to all compact shelving to expand long-term capacity. As I recall,
the stack floors were built with a load capacity of 350 lbs. per square foot
(compared to 150 lbs. per square foot in non-stack areas). Yes, we can have
compact shelving on upper floors because of the design of the building.

Hmmm, somehow I had the impression that compact shelving could only be used
on ground floors. Or maybe that's just our building, which is in that late
'60s open-atrium artsy-fartsy design. It's interesting to hear that you can
use it on upper floors. I positively *looonng* for compact shelving, and
look upon those who have it with undisguised envy. It's probably too
expensive anyway for us, now that the football team is having a bad year all
the money will go to them. But do others have compact shelving on upper
floors? (I'm on the 5th floor of a 5-level building).
See, I didn't say a thing about politics!
