Re: HELP, Please! locating info on soldiers



Hi Sybil,

I guess it all depends on the firearm.  If you can identify the
model/manufacturer then you can likely obtain a "window" of when the
firearm was manufactured.  Then, by a process of deduction, you can start
researching possible owners using census records, on-line db's etc.  Has
the current owner any knowledge from whence this arm came (i.e., family
estate sale, etc.)?  This would also help.  "SERGT" obviously refers
to the military rank of Sergeant and was widely used in the 19th century.
However, this could prove to be sticky since the original owner might have
been in an antebellum milita company, just as easily as anything else, and
extant personnel records for such units (particularly in the
West) are often "little-to-none."
