Tufts University Announces new collection

The Edwin C. Bolles Collection: A Digital Archive on the History and
Topography of London.

The Tufts University Archives, in collaboration with the Perseus
Project, is pleased to announce the release of the Edwin C. Bolles
Collection: A Digital Archive on the History and Topography of London.

Bolles, the first chaplain of Tufts College and a professor of English
and history, collected materials on Victorian London, including about
400 books, over 300 maps, and thousands of prints and other
illustrations. To read more about the Bolles Collection, see the
collection overview at:
http://www.library.tufts.edu/archives/coll/collections/ms004/

The Bolles Collection demonstrates the power of the Perseus digital
library architecture applied to a comprehensive and integrated
collection of sources and resources on the history and topography of
London. Texts, images, and maps in the Bolles collection are
interconnected, and together form a body of material, heterogeneous in
form, but homogeneous in theme, that transcends the limits of print
publication and exploits the flexibility of the electronic medium. Thus
the collection can be used in ways that are possible only in the
electronic environment, and is what makes the digital archive a new
model of access to primary and secondary source material.

The original focus of the Perseus project
(http://www.perseus.tufts.edu), starting back in 1987, was on classical
Greek art, history, and literature, and Latin and Roman materials. The
same document management system, image database, and geographic tool
set, however, can work just as well for other historical and literary
fields.

Work on the Bolles collection is supported by grants from the Institute
of Museum and Library Services, the Berger Family Technology Endowment,
and Tufts University.
