Jan. 12 Audio-Visual workshop specifics



If your collections contain mechancial sound recordings (cylinders, discs,
etc.), magnetic sound recordings (cassette/reel-to-reel, etc.), motion
picture film (35mm, 16mm, 8mm, etc.), magnetic video recordings (Beta/VHS),
and/or optical recordings, you won't want to miss this upcoming workshop.

This is a one-day short course for those who work with motion pictures,
sound recordings, and video collections.  The focus is on the fundamental
nature of the various media and the application of archival principles and
procedures to them.  The curriculum will deal with concepts, terminology,
technologies, basic conservation and preservation methods, storage
considerations, equipment needs, possibly description and more.

Who should attend? Archive administrators, archivists, media librarians,
stock footage collection staff, preservation managers, oral historians,
film/audio/video laboratory managers and staff, and others who work with
mechanical/sound/magnetic media.

Instructor:  Alan Lewis, Audio-visual expert for National Archives and
Records Administration's Special Media Archives Services Division. Mr.
Lewis has over 30 years experience in the audio-visual field including 10
years with NARA and prior experience at CBS and PBS.

Workshop attendees are asked to bring objects from their collections for
identification, discussion, and preservation advice.

Location:  Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia,
Administrative Conference Room
Cost:  $65.00 (includes lunch)
