Call for papers IASSIST / IFDO conference

Call for Papers IASSIST / IFDO conference 

The International Association for Social Science 
Information Services and Technology (IASSIST) 
will hold its 27th annual conference with the 
International Federation of Data Organizations 
(IFDO) from May 14 - 19, 2001 in Amsterdam, 
capital of The Netherlands. The title will be: 
"2001 A DATA ODYSSEY, Collaborative Working in 
the Social Science Cyber Space"

The conference program committee invites 
submissions for paper presentations, panel 
discussions, poster & demonstration sessions and 
workshops for the IASSIST/IFDO Conference.

IASSIST/IFDO conferences bring together data 
professionals, data producers, providers, and 
users from all around the world, who are engaged 
in the creation, acquisition, processing, 
maintenance, distribution, preservation, and use 
of numeric social science data for research and 
instruction.

This year's conference emphasizes the need for 
co-operation on technical and organizational 
matters, and of course on contents.

Time schedule
Workshops, May 14 and 15
Conference, May 16 - 18
Social Event, May 19
Note: May 14th is optional.

Proposals due by January 22nd 2001
The conference program committee will send 
notification of arrival when the (first) 
proposal has been received. The committee will 
send notification of acceptance by February 9th 
2001. 
There is no mandatory length of the proposals, 
but it should contain enough information to 
review the proposal. Abstracts from last year's 
IASSIST conference can be found at:

International Outreach
The International Outreach Action Group provides 
support for data professionals from developing 
economies to attend the annual conference. Full 
application information is available from the 
conference web site.

The conference themes are on specific topics on 
which we could join forces and learn from each 
other. Proposals in the following areas are 
particularly welcome.

1) Collaborative Working
a) Dividing the workload
b) Data access
c) Improving usability of data

2) Metadata     workshops are encouraged
a) Harmonisation and Networking of Data 
Infrastructure
b) Metadata tools

3) Organisational matters
a) Best of both worlds: central archives and 
local digital libraries.
b) New Archives
c) Thematic Archives
d) Digital Archiving

4) New Data
a) Registries of persons
b) Micro data on firms
c) Webdata
d) Qualitative data
e) GIS data
f) Aggregate data

Workshops
There is room for 4 - 8 workshops. One workshop 
session is 3 hours. It is possible to extend a 
workshop to two sessions. If the number of 
workshops exceeds 4, Monday May 14th will be 
included in the program.

Poster Sessions are especially invited. Some 
topics to be covered could be:
1) Statistical Software
2) Data protection tools
3) Publishers
4) Metadata
5) (Topical) Archives & Data Organisations
