Re: Film vs CD Revisited



I disagree entirely with Mr. Lewin's comments about longevity of
CD.  In his latest response, he cites that "data migration" should
not be a problem.   He supports the CD argument by citing the
many less-than-desireable storage conditions of microfilms in
small repositories.    What I've found is that in small repositories,
there is even less money for upgrading and state-of-the-art computers,
and software, consequently 'data migration' is not only impossible
but virtually not done.     At least in microfilming, you can get a
master negative, duplicating negative, and several positive copies
of each filming.    Then, even if you don't have further funding for
twenty years, you still have a viable negative...and working copies
....and you can always send the negative to another institution for
storage!
