Re: Question for NARA types and genealogists

I just wanted to take a moment to thank Mr. Hickey for your very helpful
posting on the subject of naturalization papers. This seems to always
be confusing to our researchers.

I am not sure if this problem/confusion exists elsewhere, but here in
Pittsburgh/Allegheny County, naturalization papers were issued by both
the Clerk of Courts and the Prothonotary. The Clerk of Courts issued
theirs in two sessions of Common Please Court. Session I covered the
years 1799-1894. Session 2 covered the years 1834-1906. For the
Prothonotary's office there were issued by the Quarter Sessions Court
from 1799-1906 and by the Superior Court from 1837-1855. As you can see
there is overlap between the two issuing parties.
