Re: Archives brochure for the layman

Hello Dominic,

There are a couple of series of pamphlets put out by archival organizations that may interest you.

A couple of pamphlets that I use with prospective donors are "A Guide to Donating Your Personal or Family Papers to a Repository," and "A Guide to Deeds of Gift," both published by the Society of American Archivists. They do a good job of explaining the basics about what constitutes an archival/manuscript collection, and why one might want to donate such material. These can be ordered from or viewed at SAA's website at:
http://www.archivists.org/catalog/index.html

Another useful series is published by the Society of California Archivists, and includes one pamphlet titled "Family Papers: Preservation and Organization." Other titles in this series focus on oral history, neighborhood history, and preservation of photographs. You can find out more about this series at the SCA website (under "Publications") at
http://www.calarchivists.org/
One caveat, though...if you wish to order these, the address at the bottom of the page is no longer current. Try "Society of California Archivists, c/o California State Archives, 1020 "O" Street, Sacramento, CA, 95814" instead.

Cheers,
