Re: Acid content of laminate

Here's what I decided to do instead of laminating: I cut legal size acid
free folders into pieces that are 3 1/2" x 7" and attach a label from OCLC
that contains call number, author, title, etc. near top edge of the piece of
folder. You could handwrite or type this instead and also add a barcode,
etc. I then insert the "bookmark" into a mylar stereo sleeve which is the
same size. I order these from Gaylord (#PN37) The mylar sleeve creates a
barrier between the adhesive on the labels and the book itself. They work
pretty well and look nice.

Subject: Acid content of laminate

Group,

Are there any sources out there that give some evidence one way on the
acidity or safety of laminating materials? We're looking for some
alternatives to marking books in our special collection--on the order of
acid free bookmarks, but cheaper. Someone suggested laminating our own
bookmarks, with the barcode and call number sealed in, but I'm afraid the
laminating material would be just as likely to yellow and discolor over
time. Is this true?
