Internet auction values

Happy New Year to everyone a little belatedly. Here are two esoteric
questions that came up here concerning the often grossly inflated prices
people pay for collectibles on the Internet auctions. First, does the IRS
accept these kinds of prices as being valid for tax deductions, and second,
what are these extreme prices liable to do to the future values of these
records?

I know this is a bit far afield, but as the issue of taking tax writeoffs
for donations to an archive is raised by some donors, it would be good to
know what other people have run into.

Best wishes for the New Year,
