Historical Program Specialist

Starting salary: $35,464.00   Salary range:  ($35,464 - $45,780)
The State Archives and Records Bureau, a unit within the State Historical
Society of Iowa, looks to hire a professional archivist.

Duties will include:
To identify state government records so that permanently valuable records
are preserved and made available for use in accord with the Code of Iowa and
so that non-permanent records are retained for only as long as necessary and
are destroyed in accord with records retention schedules established by the
State Records Commission.  To serve as liaison between the State Archives
and Records Bureau and specific state agencies in all matters related to
state government records issues.   To review and evaluate proposed records
retention and disposition schedules to assure that administrative, legal,
fiscal, and historical requirements are met so that the proposed records
retention schedules can be considered by the State Records Commission.  To
review state government records transfer authorization requests against
approved schedules to assure that records transferred to the legal and/or
physical custody of the State Archives and Records Bureau have met scheduled
retention periods in the office and that they are transferred appropriately
to either the State Records Center or the State Archives of Iowa.

To identify, arrange, describe, catalog, and preserve state government
records that have been transferred to the legal custody of the State
Archives and Records Bureau so that they will be available for patron use in
the State Historical Society of Iowa reading room.  To serve as subject
specialist to assist reference staff with detailed questions related to
records of agencies for which this position serves as liaison.

To provide advice and counsel to assigned state government agencies on
issues regarding archives and records management issues.  To assist with the
State Archives and Records Bureau educational outreach and technical
assistance and training efforts to state agency audiences.

To participate in bureau and agency planning and program development and to
perform such other duties as may be assigned by the State Archivist from
time to time.
Essential functions: knowledge of archival and records management theories
and principles; understanding of governmental organization and operation;
ability to read, write and communicate in English; ability to climb ladders
and maneuver boxes while on ladders; ability to receive, interpret and
disseminate information on complex issues; ability to lift and carry boxes
with weights up to 30 pounds; ability to operate office machines such as
photocopier, fax, telephone and microfilm reader/printer; ability to use
word processing, data base and spread sheet. REQUIRED SELECTIVE
CERTIFICATION; 462 ARCHIVIST.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree with major in history,
anthropology, archeology, architecture, curatorial-museum management,
literature, English, art, natural history, architectural history, library
science, historic preservation, and one year full time experience in
professional research, museum, education, editor, or other experience
assoicated with history, anthropology, archaeology, architecture,
architectural history, art, museums, historic sites, or historic
preservation. In addition, twelve semester hours coursework or six months
experience is required to meet Selective Certification as Archivist.
