Position Announcement for  Special Collections Librarian/Archivist
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Lupton Library
Position Available:  Beginning January 1, 2001

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga seeks a creative and
service-oriented Special Collections Librarian.

Responsibilities
This individual will set goals and develop and implement policies and
procedures for the library's manuscript and rare books collections and
university archives.  The Special Collections Librarian will hold the
responsibility of overall management of special collections, including the
acquisition, selection, organization, preservation, and processing of
materials.  This person will prepare finding aids designed to facilitate
collection access, promote and publicize the collection, both on and off
campus, liaison with the university's development office, and participate in
fund-raising and grant writing activities.  The Special Collections
Librarian will work collaboratively with the library's catalogers in order
to incorporate the cataloging of materials into the general workflow and
will cooperate with the library's public service areas to make collections
accessible.  This position may require occasional weekend work at the
library's general reference desk.

Qualifications
Required: 1) ALA accredited MLS or graduate degree in history with an
archival concentration or archival certification; 2) demonstrated experience
working in a special collections department providing access to records,
applying standard archival procedures, preferably in an academic library; 3)
evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills that will enable
candidate to work collegially and cooperatively with students, faculty,
staff and a variety of community patrons; 4) demonstrated ability to perform
historical research; ability to work well in a rapidly changing environment;
ability to use computer technologies to make materials accessible.
Preferred: 1) general reference desk experience in an academic library; 2)
demonstrated knowledge of emerging information technologies and their impact
on special collections and archives services and procedures; 3) demonstrated
computer skills; 4) experience supervising others.

Salary and benefits
Salary: $34,000. This is a twelve-month, tenure-track position with faculty
rank, status, privileges and responsibilities.  Benefits include 24 days
annual and 12 days sick leave/year; choice of retirement programs which are
paid by state and equivalent to approximately 10% of individual's annual
salary.
