Re: Container storage of archives collections

Hello again,

My name is Maggie Humberston, and I run the Genealogy and Local History
Library at the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum which is located in
Springfield, Mass. - the western part of the state.
In answer to your questions, Peter, we are putting largely unprocessed or
partially processed collections in storage and we don't plan on having
access to them for several months. There is no money available for offsite
storage with a records storage facility. The reason for the delay in moving
to the new site is not the contractor's fault. We are moving into the
basement space of a branch library which will be undergoing its own
renovations after we're ensconced. The architects for that project are
redoing the HVAC system and found that they need to repipe the area we will
be occupying. Our project manager doesn't want to have compact storage
installed until that's taken care of. Since another renovation project is
going to happen in the space we currently occupy there is a need to move
our collections out of that space, hence the proposal for placing our
materials in containers temporarily. The delay will probably be 4 months,
provided there are no more suprises! Our compact storage has been
rescheduled to be erected in mid May.
