Archives/records ma

I loved the portrayal of the archivists/records manager on the Touched
by an Angel episode Sunday. I would hope that all archivists would have
such an experience. At the beginning of the show the archivists
displayed such humility and an ability to work hard at a job few even
considered. But, God had given him his job and he accepted it as
important work even if it was not flashy or one about which television
shows were written. He worked hard at it and preserved the records
well. He lived in those records and cared for them with tenderness. In
the end he realized that God had given him a special message that only
he could deliver and his work is important.

I like to think that of my archives too. Ultimately when people write
about our past, it is the documents that we save that will make the
difference. We are custodians of our subject area's legacy. We don't get
a lot of attention. We are not generally the "sexiest" place in the
organization. But, when people need to remember something they are
grateful when or if they remember to call us. What we have save will be
their interpretation of the past. I like that. It makes me feel
important.
