Re: Opera theatre archives
Maria,
Hello from Canada.
I saw your comments on the Archives and Archivists List about the difficulty of applying the "fonds" concept to non-governmental records and wondered if you are aware of the descriptive work that has been done in Canada where we (unlike the Americans) have based our descriptive standards for both governmental and non-governmental records on respect des fonds. (There is currently considerable debate over whether or not to keep the word "fonds" in our descriptions -- I'm in favour of doing so -- but that need not detain us here.)
You might want to get a copy of our Rules for Archival Description (RAD) through the Canadian Council of Archives in Ottawa. Check the Web for the address.
On your primary question about Opera Archives, I believe that there is an archives for the Canadian Opera Company. You could probably find the address etc. online at: http://www.cdncouncilarchives.ca/dir.html, which might help you identify other Canadian archives that you might want to contact.
Good luck.
Sally
