DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Manages the operations of the Cataloging Department. Responsible for all
activities dealing with bibliographic control of library materials for
the Houston Public Library system. Responsible for developing, revising
and implementing cataloging policies and procedures. Responsible for
developing and implementing department goals and establishing priorities
and workflow. Selects, supervises, and evaluates all department
personnel, aided by consultation with supervisory personnel within the
department. Prepares statistical and management reports. Keeps abreast
of new developments in the cataloging field and assists catalogers in
interpreting cataloging rules. Communicates with library vendor in
resolving problems. Assists with special projects as requested.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Position
requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20
pounds. Must be able to use a computer to access/input information. Must
be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library
materials.

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four (4) years of professional cataloging experience, including one year
of management experience.

PREFERENCES
Experience in original cataloging and in the use of current AACR2, MARC
formats, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress subject
headings, and the OCLC system. Cataloging experience with electronic
resources and familiarity with digitization projects and metadata
schemes, i.e. Dublin Core. Experience with Innovative Interfaces
software. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an
ability to work independently as well as cooperatively are essential.
Knowledge of one or more foreign languages preferred.

SALARY INFORMATION
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's
qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this
classification.  The minimum to midpoint of this salary range is:
$44,370 - $52,695 Annually
