Re: "Underpaid...and not Well Understood"

You have touched on a subject of interest here. Library suppliers have a lot
of "canned" promotional and advertising things to sell. Demco is a good
example. Over the last several years, I have tried to interest Demco in
pursuing an archives promotional line. I am but one little, lone archivist
and obviously carry little weight with them. Please tell me if I'm mistaken,
but I haven't found a supplier that carried an archives promotional line.
Maybe someone(s) with archival professional weight could take this on as a
project? It would be nice to have stuff that we could personalize with our
institutional name. Sure, we can line this up individually on our own, but
the time and expense is much greater and that means we may only do it ever
so often. I see a classy "You have supported history with your donation
to..." refrigerator magnet in my future!

"Another factor is the inescapable and unpleasant fact that most people have
no need to use archives. Certainly, more people COULD find archival
collections useful than do at present, but our potential audience is, in
fact, not universal."

This the biggest problem. Trying to show the need for archives. This goes
back to a previous thread in which I suggested that archival organizations
need to do more outreach/advertising. What items in your archives could be
used as decorative material if reproduced. Take a look at an Applebees,
Fridays, Soup and Salad or any other theme restaurant for an example. What
material from your collection is publishable? marketable? reproducible
(sic?)

No the audience is not universal, but here are a few professions that can
and should use archives
interior designers (theatrical, set, movie included)
Graphic designers
Advertising agencies
Book publishers
postcard publishers
webdesigners
fashion designers
illustrators
calendar publishers

Think in a non-traditional manner. Develop a relationship with a local
journalist, develop a cable tv program for your local cable access channel.

Now back to proposal writing.
