Book Advice needed

Esteemed Collegues,
The director of our museum just handed me the Fall/Winter 1999 catalogue
of the AAM Bookstore and asked me to mark any titles I thought might be
useful. I have done so to my limited knowledge but as my degree is in
history and I have, as yet, little formal training I was hoping some of you
could let me know if some of them are worth it.

My greatest lack is in conservation/preservation and I'm looking to get
some basic knowledge in the area. I've read the New Museum Registration
Methods chapters on this as well as a couple of other titles but they've
only touched on it in passing (except for the NMRM, chapter on marking).
There are a couple of pamphlets that look promising but the publication
dates are rather old. The titles I'm considering are: "Conservation
Concerns: A Guide For Collectors adn Curators," 1992; and "Caring for
Collections: Strategies for Conservation, Maintenance, and Documentation,"
1984. Is the info in these still up to date or should I look elsewhere? I
don't want a really detailed technical manual, I want something basic I can
refer to for general info and explanations. (I have one book that goes into
the chemistry of each material to be conserved and the various compounds of
synthetic polymers etc., quite informative to a scientist but useless to me
presently).

Any suggestions and helpful hints are greatly appreciated.
