DIGITAL MANUSCRIPTS PROGRAM, NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE

The Digital Manuscripts Program of the National Library of Medicine in
Bethesda is seeking a graduate student in the field of library science,
science education, or related subject interest for the NIH Summer Internship
Opportunities Program.  The Digital Manuscripts Program produces Profiles in
Science, a project that digitizes the papers of prominent 20th century
biomedical scientists.  The position is a Technical Information Specialist,
GS-1412-7 level, with an annual salary of $28,091. This position may be full
or part time (up to 40 hours/week) and will be available between the months
of May and September 2001.

The summer intern will help develop and improve the educational and outreach
efforts of Profiles in Science.  The intern will research and analyze the
Profiles in Science website (www.profiles.nlm.nih.gov), evaluate other
educational websites, and develop proposals for facilitating the use of the
site in educational environments, specifically for users at the high school
and undergraduate degree level.  These proposals might include creating
thematic approaches to the collections, building bibliographies of related
reading materials, and preparing general guidelines for educators using
specific documents in the collections.
