Reference Archivist

The Kansas State Historical Society's (KSHS) Library and Archives Division
is seeking a reference archivist to become part of the core reference team
that provides reference assistance to individuals researching Kansas and
local history, western history or family history in person or via mail,
telephone, and e-mail.

This position provides assistance to researchers by explaining card
catalogs and other finding aids; discussing library, manuscript, map,
photograph, and states archives holdings in a centralized reading room
setting; describing research services available; and suggesting sources by
means of a ?reference interview at the beginning of the patrons? research.
In addition to assisting researchers visiting the reading room, duties will
include responding to mail, telephone, and e-mail reference requests. The
person in this position will also spend a portion of their time performing
arrangement and description activities as well as assisting with the
division?s outreach/promotion efforts  to publicize the nature of the
collections and how to use them.

Minimum requirements: BA in History, American Studies, or a related field.

Required knowledge and skills: The ability to communicate effectively, both
orally and in writing;  the ability to establish effective working
relationships with a variety of people with varying levels of research
experience; demonstrated knowledge of research tools and methodology
particularly those relating to history or genealogy; and knowledge of
archival principles and best practices.  It also requires a knowledge of
personal computers for word processing, data entry, database searching, and
internet browsing.

Preferred: A master's degree in library and information science, archival
or historical administration, history or a related field.  Prior experience
of at least one year in a reference position and knowledge of genealogical
research materials and/or Kansas history.

This position works a Tuesday through Saturday schedule with one Saturday
off every 6th week.

Salary Range: $27,996?$36,566.40 plus full State of Kansas benefits.
