ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST
Northeastern University
Boston, Massachusetts

Responsibilities: Manage service and processing operations, including
supervising the Reading Room, assisting researchers, monitoring patron use,
directing processing operations, developing appraisal and processing plans,
preparing descriptive inventories, and overseeing creation of bibliographic
records.  Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.   Working with the
University Archivist, develop, identify funding for, and implement special
projects. Develop grant proposals, and project reports.  Develop and sustain
effective relationships with campus, community, and organization
representatives, liaisons, and other constituencies.  Participate in Library
and University planning. Assume responsibility for the department in the
absence of the Head.  Plan and implement exhibits.  Oversee the departmental
website.  Assist in records management activities.

Setting: Northeastern, an urban Carnegie Research II institution, is student
focused and dedicated to a cooperative education/experiential learning model.
A diverse student body of 16,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate students is
enrolled in seven undergraduate colleges, nine graduate and professional
schools, and two part-time undergraduate divisions.  There also are active
continuing education and distance learning programs. The University Archives
actively collects in the area of social justice, especially relating to

Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS or graduate degree in history with an
archival specialization; 1-3 years of demonstrated successful experience in an
archival setting. Knowledge of archival principles and practices.  Experience
supervising the processing of archival and manuscript collections preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, interpersonal,
planning, analytical, conceptual, and supervisory skills.  Ability to work
effectively with colleagues, donors, administrators, faculty, students, and
members of under-documented communities. Ability to work independently,
prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Familiarity with USMARC format.
Demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to issues of diversity in the
workplace.  Ability and willingness to lift boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.
Knowledge of records management techniques preferred.
