Summer internship opportunity - Iowa



The Special Collections Department at the Iowa State University Library and the American Phytopathological Society would like to announce an internship opportunity.

Background:

Iowa State University is a premier land-grant university located in Ames, Iowa, just 30 miles north of Des Moines. Lauded for the beauty of the campus, Iowa State was founded in 1858 and today is the home of approximately 25,000 students.

The ISU Special Collections Department was founded in 1969 and possesses over 20,000 linear ft. of collections and over 25,000 rare book volumes.  The majority of archival collections relate to agriculture, science and technology, and the history of Iowa State University.  

The American Phytopathological Society (APS), founded in 1909, is an educational, professional and scientific society dedicated to the promotion of the plant health and plant disease control for the common good. APS members work to promote knowledge of plant diseases and their control through publications, meetings, symposia, workshops and special activities.   

Responsibilities:

The selected intern will undertake the arrangement, description, preservation, and cataloging of the approximately 95 linear feet of American Phytopathological Society records housed in the Iowa State University Special Collections Department.  

Qualifications:

Must be a graduate student with a demonstrated interest in archives or archival research. An interest in botany, microbiology, crop science, soil science, ecology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, or physiology is preferred.  Familiarity with word processing in a Windows-based environment and the ability to work well independently are essential. Applicants must be detail-oriented, have good organizational skills, and be able to lift 40+ pounds regularly.

Funding:

The selected candidate will be paid $10.00 per hour and should plan to work approximately 30-40 hours per week. The internship will begin at the end of the 2000-2001 academic year and continue through the summer.  The weekly schedule as well as start and end dates are flexible.
