Part-time job position in Chicago



Cataloging Assistant (Part Time: 17.5 hours per week)

The Cataloging Assistant provides clerical and technical support for the
creation of automated and manual records for CHS collections and
collection items, to make these collections accessible to the broadest
group of users possible. The Cataloging Assistant takes an active role
in the development of catalog records for CHS special-format collection
materials.
POSITION DUTIES:
*       Gather and input descriptive, provenance, authorship, subject and
other appropriate information pertaining to individual collection items into
automated cataloging system, according to established standards and in-house
policies.
*       Edit and revise draft catalog records for accuracy, completeness,
and form.
*       Research date, biographical, and other historical information for
inclusion in catalog records.
*       Participate in developing and implementing new methods, procedures,
policies, and objectives regarding the accessioning, documentation and
cataloging of collections.
*       Perform other related duties as assigned.
*       Preferred Qualifications
*       Excellent word-processing Skills and typing at 70 WPM with excellent
accuracy.
*       Working familiarity with Excel, Word, and other Windows software
*       General knowledge of American and Chicago History
*       Demonstrated ability to work in teams, to solve technical and
procedural problems creatively
*       Good oral and written communication skills, and the ability to deal
diplomatically and effectively with members of the public
*       Commitment to excellent public service
*       One year of experience in a library or archives
*       General knowledge of the principles and uses of automated systems,
and a working familiarity with USMARC format and Anglo-American Cataloging
Rules (second edition)
*       Familiarity with or the ability to use the cataloging module of the
Horizon system.

        This position is part-time for 17.5 hours per week during the hours
9 A.M. - 5 P.M., Monday through Saturday.
