The price isn't right

If things get really bad, Bill Clinton may think about blaming some of his
fund-raising problems on Franklin Roosevelt. After all, it was F.D.R. who
started the trend toward big-time presidential libraries that has Clinton
trying to raise $150 million to build his center in Little Rock, Ark. Before
F.D.R., the most your typical President could look forward to was a shack
with a plaque. When he left office, he held on to his papers. But F.D.R., who
invented the modern presidency, also invented the modern presidential
library.

Washington documents donated to Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, Va. (CNN) -- Using the President's Day holiday as a backdrop,
the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company donated two documents signed by George
Washington to historic Mount Vernon, the site of Washington's home.
The documents were formally handed over during a ceremony on the lawn next to
the Mount Vernon mansion, home of the man who led the Continental Army to an
improbable victory for independence and was the first president of the United
States.

Gem of a museum details history of California's pioneering days

It sits in the heart of the evolving cultural nexus of museums, theaters and
restaurants around Yerba Buena Gardens, just down the block from the
electronic playground known as Metreon. Most passersby simply stumble inside
and discover yet another multimedia, interactive place to spend time: the new
Society of California Pioneers.
Yeah. Gold rush miners.

History, Pius and the holocaust
Push for canonization sparks search for truth
http://www.freep.com/news/religion/cath16_20010216.htm

by David Crumm
Pope John Paul II hoped to usher his 1-billion-member Catholic Church into
the year 2001 free of the sins of the past.
For more than a year, the pontiff called for forgiveness and reconciliation
over the Inquisition, the Holocaust and other troubling chapters of church
history.
But a campaign to canonize World War II-era Pope Pius XII and the Vatican's
secrecy about its archives concerning him have sparked a worldwide feeding
frenzy by scholars determined to find the truth about the enigmatic pontiff.

Area veterans seek files on time as Japan POWs

WASHINGTON -- Sixty years ago, Tracy resident Melvin Routt fell into the
hands of the Japanese Imperial Army.
What happened next, as a prisoner of war and slave laborer on Japan's home
islands, is tattooed in Routt's memory.
But the broader historical memory of what happened to other American, Chinese
and Korean prisoners remains in some cases locked away in secret archives.
Now, a new law could help pry open the World War II files.

Showdown looms over pardon documents
http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/24378.htm

by Vincent Morris
WASHINGTON - The deadline for Denise Rich to turn bank account records over
to Congress arrives today, as the Bill Clinton pardon probe cranks forward.
Congressional Republicans vow a court fight to get all subpoenaed records
related to the pardon if they aren't turned over voluntarily.
But Clinton lawyer David Kendall said more than a week ago that he'll defy a
subpoena seeking a confidential list of donors - which includes Denise Rich -
to the ex-president's $200 million, to-be-built library in Little Rock.

by Harry R. Weber
Associated Press
HANOVER, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire authorities offered few answers Monday to
lingering questions in the murder of two Dartmouth College professors.
And that apparently will continue to be the situation as an assistant
attorney general said prosecutors would fight unsealing court records related
to search and arrest warrants in the case.
Assistant Senior Attorney General Malinda Lawrence said at a news conference
Monday afternoon investigators will seek secrecy so as not to compromise the
investigation.

Protect yourself: Tear your name to shreds

One way criminals latch on to the details of your identity is by raiding the
personal papers you may blithely set out at curbside.
A cheap, easy step to reduce personal risk: use paper shredders.
Machines that once were the stuff of spy movies and corporate espionage are
now very much part of middle America.
Home shredders are being widely promoted by retailers for prices as low as
$10. And record numbers of consumers are buying small models that can destroy
personal documents before they fall into the wrong hands.

Arlington Morning News
There is talk of an Arlington-based George W. Bush Presidential Library - and
it began before the last hanging chads were counted.
"I can tell you that prior to the completion of the counting of ballots in
Florida, there were talks ongoing in Arlington about the possibility of the
library being built here," former Mayor Richard Greene said Monday.
