A UNESCO website presenting its Slave Trade Archives Project, which was
established within the framework of its «Memory of the World» Programme, is
now online. Funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation
(NORAD), the project is concerned with the access to and preservation of
original archive materials relating to the transatlantic slave trade.
The project takes place within the context of UNESCO’s «Slave Route» Project
which examines slave trade and its economic and political impact. As a basis
for further studies and as part of the world common bondage of history, slave
trade original records are elements of great importance and must be ensured
adequate preservation and improved access.
An important starting element of the Slave Trade Archives Project is a
questionnaire to identify archives and other institutions holding slave trade
related material, and to establish a clear picture on the conditions of
conservation of and access to these documents. A detailed project programme
will be drawn up from the results of the survey.
