Cataloging archival materials: Title field added entries?

This was a topic of great discussion at the "Archival
Cataloging as a Component of Description" SAA workshop I
took last year (taught by Melissa Delbridge & Lynn
Holdzkorn), and it's definitely one of those places that
APPM diverges from AACR2 & LC. According these last two
cataloging standards, one should not be making up titles,
but then, they're based on the assumption that you're
cataloging books with title pages. Collections, not having
title pages and being collected under sometimes unfathomable
criteria created by people, are messy. We routinely, and
unbasedly, supply titles. When I catalog a ms or archival
collection, my goal is to facilitate access, so I feel I
have more flexibility than when I catalog books.

This is the kind of thing that I might do:
100 1 Brite, John Duncan, #d 1901-
245 10 John Duncan Brite papers, #f 1878-1971 #g (bulk
1955-1971) #h [manuscript]
246 3 Papers of John Duncan Brite
300 2 #f linear ft. (5 boxes)

I also might include an added title for the "common name"
of something i.e. if a collection's been known as the
"curiosity cabinet collection" for 30 years, I'll include
that too. Also, if the papers or records of one entity
within the papers or records of another entity are
significant, I add a title added entry for that collection,
too (appm 2.3F)

I've been using the 1st indicator as "1" (traced) if it is
a complete title; if I use just "Papers," I'd use "00,"
however, there are probably varying opinions on this--
appm's examples all use 00.

Subject: Cataloging archival materials: Title field added
entries?

This is a question (or maybe an issue for discussion) to
those who catalog
archival materials using APPM. Well, maybe 2 questions.
First, I'm wondering
if there's any way to get an idea of how many APPM
catalogers devise
collection titles that include more descriptive wording
than just "Papers"
or "Records" (and a date range). Next, if you do supply a
more descriptive
title (for example, Broussais C. Beck papers, 1919-1961),
and you've used
the originator of the papers as your main entry (in this
case, Beck,
Broussais C. in the 100 field), do you create a title added
entry for your
devised title field? I.e., do you set the 1st 245 indicator
code to 0 or 1?
The LC Rule Interpretations dictate that title added
entries are not to be
provided for devised titles, but I'm wondering if any of
you index them
nonetheless? Are there any strong feelings about this
issue?

Many thanks.
