Subject:        Spring, 2001 ASPP Meeting -- The Future of Archival and Editorial Photography

THE FUTURE OF ARCHIVAL AND EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
As technology changes the way the world stores and accesses images, what is
to become of the tens of millions of historic photographic images archived
in museums, libraries, stock agencies, photographer's files and private
collections across the country? This is a question of great concern to
publishers, educators, academics, historians, researchers, archivists and
collections managers, as well as the image creators themselves. The very
technologies that have expanded our access to visual images now threaten to
restrict them. The expense of digitizing large collections of images, along
with consolidation and downsizing among the organizations and institutions
that own the images, is forcing serious reappraisal of archival priorities.
Hard choices are being made by stock agencies, museums and libraries on what
images to keep accessible and which ones to send off to the salt mines. Is
there a resolution that adequately serves the needs of both image owners and
image users? ASPP has assembled a panel of experts from the museum, archive,
photography, stock image and publishing industries to explore all sides of
the question. Attendees will be invited to participate in the discussion.
Panel members are scheduled to include:
